Un restauro firmato Dorantes: la Berlina di gala di Felipe I di Francia

Una volta al mese il Real Club de Enganches de Andalusia a Siviglia intrattiene i soci con temi di cultura legata all’arte del ben attaccare. La “tertulia” di febbraio ha visto la storia del restauro di una carrozza unica al mondo: una berlina di gala appartenuta a Felipe I di Francia e restaurata dall’ “oficina” di Francisco Dorantes Caro di Lebrija (Siviglia). Giudicato dal mondo spagnolo come il miglior restauratore del Paese, noto per la sua profonda cultura e per le indagini storiche che svolge prima di iniziare il lavoro, giudicato dal chairman della riunione come un artista che ha fatto un’opera d’arte.La berlina, costruita intorno al 1818, fu custodita a lungo all’ingresso dell’Alcazar di Siviglia, antica reggia dei regnanti arabi, ora museo, dove fu lasciata al piu’ completo abbandono. Fu poi ospitata nella collezione di Miguel Gallego a causa di lavori di sistemazione dell’Alcazar. Da qui fu portata all’officina Dorantes per il complesso restauro da operare.Appartenuta a Felipe I di Francia, divenne poi del duca di Montpessier e infine fu donata all’Archicofradia Sacramental de Pasion de Sevilla.Lo stato di conservazione riscontrato era molto precario; mancava la parte anteriore, gli interni erano alquanto rovinati e le ruote avevano numerosi problemi.Alcune curiosità riferite da Francisco Dorantes: la carrozza non ha fanali; porta il proprio nome inciso su una parte in cuoio, “la couronne”; porta incisa sul treno anteriore la data 1848 concomitante all’abdicazione di Felipe I, la data di inizio della costruzione della carrozza (1814) e il nome del costruttore Charles Lucas Birch; porta dipinto lo scudo del matrimonio della casa reale spagnola unito allo scudo della casa reale di Orleans. Il procedimento di restauro è stato basato su alcuni principi essenziali: studio organico approfondito; trattamento pesante antitarlo; pulizia generale e interna; pulizia con agenti chimici e meccanici e reintegrazione dei volumi; cura e restauro della policromia con particolare riferimento alla sua protezione; pulizia e restauro dei metalli; della tappezzeria interna e del cuoio.Ogni sezione è stata illustrata per immagini. Un grande lavoro accurato, dettato dalla passione.Passione non solo nel lavoro tecnico del restauro ma anche in tutti i componenti la squadra che lavora sotto il marchio Dorantes Harness, senza i quali il nome della “Casa Dorantes” non sarebbe arrivato così in alto.La “tertulia” sul restauro della berlina ha rappresentato un altro successo del Real Club de Enganches de Andalusia che non cura solo la tecnica del corretto attaccare ma cura la formazione culturale dei soci e degli appassionati a salvaguardia di una parte della Storia così importante.Al Real Club de Enganches de Andalusia vanno i ringraziamenti per la serata e gli auguri per il recente incarico di Presidente e vice Presidente dell’Association Internationale de Attelage de Tradicion AIAT (associazione di appassionati degli attacchi a carattere internazionale)a due illustri soci, Josè Juan Morales e Raimundo Coral Rubiales.

A RESTORE SIGNED DORANTES: THE SEDAN OF FELIPE I OF FRANCE

Once a month the Real Club de Enganches de Andalusia in Seville entertains members with cultural topics linked to the art of well driving.
February's "tertulia" saw the story of the restoration of a unique carriage in the world: a gala sedan that belonged to Felipe I of France and restored by the "oficina" of Francisco Dorantes Caro of Lebrija (Seville). Judged by the Spanish world as the best restorer in the country, known for his profound culture and for the historical investigations he carries out before starting the work, judged by the chairman of the meeting as an artist who has created a work of art.

The sedan, built around 1818, was kept for a long time at the entrance to the Alcazar of Seville, the ancient palace of the Arab rulers, now a museum, where it was left completely abandoned. It was then housed in the collection of Miguel Gallego due to renovation work on the Alcazar. From here it was taken to the Dorantes workshop for the complex restoration to be carried out.

It belonged to Felipe I of France, it then became the property of the Duke of Montpessier and was finally donated to the Archicofradia Sacramental de Pasion de Sevilla.

The state of conservation found was very precarious; The front part was missing, the interior was quite ruined and the wheels had numerous problems.
Some curiosities reported by Francisco Dorantes: the carriage has no lights; it bears its name engraved on a leather part, “la couronne”; the date 1848 coinciding with the abdication of Felipe I, the date of the start of construction of the carriage (1814) and the name of the builder Charles Lucas Birch are engraved on the front train; it bears the painted shield of the marriage of the Spanish Royal House combined with the shield of the Royal House of Orleans. 

The restoration procedure was based on some essential principles: in-depth organic study; heavy anti-woodworm treatment; general and internal cleaning; cleaning with chemical and mechanical agents and volume reintegration; care and restoration of polychromy with particular reference to its protection; cleaning and restoration of metals; of the internal upholstery and leather.
Each section has been illustrated with images. A great, accurate job, made by passion.

Passion not only in the technical work of the restoration but also in all the members of the team that work under the Dorantes Harness brand, without whom the name of “Casa Dorantes” would not have reached so high.

The "tertulia" on the restoration of the sedan represented another success of the Real Club de Enganches de Andalusia which not only takes care of the technique of correct binding but takes care of the cultural education of members and enthusiasts to safeguard such an important part of history.
